Publication: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1931, Boston
First Edition. Second issue. Original Orange Cloth, xiv, 392 pp., Frontispiece, Foreword, Illustrated, Index. Adams 150: 93 says, "The book purports to be a biography of Wyatt Earp, recorded at the instigation of his third wife. Many writers and other men who knew Earp personally held him to be utterly unlike the character portrayed by Lake. This book omits all the shady incidents of his life and does everything possible to glorify him...Yet it should be classed as an important book because it is so well written and was so greatly read. Due to this book the majority of readers still hold Earp to be a great hero."--Adams 150-93. A unique copy in that it has the signatures of 13 early settlers to Tombstone, showing the year in which they came to Tombstone, written on the front free-endpaper. Most significant is the signature of Arizona lawman, Jeff Milton. In addition, signatures include Walter H. Cole, Editor of the Tombstone Epitaph; James Hagan, Crystal Palace Saloon bartender and witness to the gunfight at the OK Corral; Edith A. Macia, Postmaster: and several others, all of whom arrived in Tombstone between 1880 & 1894. A unique and interesting association copy. Bumps to both lower forecorners and darkening to spine, else a very good-near fine, bright, tight copy. Elusive, second issue dust jacket has external clear-tape reinforcement at lower corners and spine ends, and rubbing to edges.
