Winona was located in Houghton County and its days of glory were between 1898 when the copper mining company was employing more than 300 people, and the closing of the copper mines on March 15, 1920. The "King Philip" name was named for "Philip," advisor of the Wamanoag Indians and son of Massasoit. The King Philip Location was the name given to the property by the Company's President Arthur G.
