Adams 150 # 35 says, "The author tames down the McCanles-Hickok affair somewhat. While some writers have claimed the fight was the result of McCandles' horse stealing and others have stated that he was trying to collect a debt, this author says the trouble started over the woman Kate Shull...Scarce."
