First edition. Thick 8vo. Three quarter leather and marbled paper over boards, marbled endpapers, p.273-285, double column, illustrated. Story appears in Harper's New Monthly Magazine No CCI, Vol. XXXIV, February, 1867. Entire volume contains issues for Volume XXXIV, December, 1866, to May, 1867. This is the preferred binding with "Volume XXXIV" preferred to "Volume 34" and the marbled endpapers are preferred to the plain endpapers. The author met Wild Bill in Springfield, Missouri in the summer of 1865, and relates firsthand accounts of stories Hickok told him. Included in the stories is the "M'Kandlas" fight, the "Tutt" duel, and two Civil War scouting stories. Also included in the volume are "Davy Crockett's Electioneering Tour", The Virginians In Texas",a few Civil War stories including "Heroic Deeds Of Heroic Men", and Personal Recollections Of The War", and much more. Under the section titled "Current Events" is a mention of the Fort Philip Kearney massacre along with the number of dead and that Col. Carrington was arrested for neglect of duty. Also in the December issue in this volume appears FORTY-THREE DAYS IN AN OPEN BOAT on page 104 which is Mark Twain's first nationally published writing. He is listed as "Mark Swain" in the table of contents. Very good, tight copy of a difficult title.
