First Edition. Original Decorated Brown Cloth. xxiii, 700+[1]. Preface. Introduction. Frontispiece. 20 Plates. Sub-titled: By Hon. A. B. Meacham, Ex-Superintendent Of Indian Affairs And Chairman Of The Late Modoc Peace Commission, Illustrated By Portraits Of The Author, General Canby, Dr. Thomas, Captain Jack, Schonchin, Scar-Faced Charley, Black Jim, Boston Charley, Tobey And Riddle, And Eleven Other Spirited And Life-Like Engravings, Of Actual Scenes From Modoc Indian Life, As Witnessed By The Author. An excellent first-hand account of conditions and issues that lead to the Modoc refusal to go on the Klamath Indian Reservation in Oregon. When the Army attempted to force the move, the Modoc resisted and killed or wounded many soldiers and citizens while incurring few casualties themselves. For the next several months the Army tried to remove the Modoc from their stronghold in the Lava Beds near Tule Lake, each battle resulting in heavy Army casualties, yet few among the Modocs. Meacham's account of events when the Modoc turned on the Peace Commission, killing 2 and wounding 2 others is the only first-hand account of this tragic event. Some very light edgewear. A handsome copy of this beautifully bound work. Title in gilt and black on front and spine, and blind-stamped on rear panel. Ornate gilt bands and gilt image of Indian wielding a tomahawk on spine. Moderate foxing to frontispiece, tissue, and title page. An exceptionally nice copy of a book usually found in poor condition due to the number of pages in this heavy work. Also laid-in is the 9-page report made by A. B. Meacham and others to the Commissioner Of Indian Affairs, entitled "Report Of A. B. Meacham, Special Commissioner To The Modocs, Upon The Late Modoc War.", disbound from the 1874 Annual Report Of The Commissioner Of Indian Affairs To The Secretary Of The Interior For The Year 1873. Protected in a custom slipcase with title, author, and year of publication in gilt on leather label on spine.
