First edition. 8vo. This copy with a long presentation from the author "To my friend Buck Duane" quoting "a good old Sioux Indian's parting message in sign language." Also with a tipped in photograph of the author and a friend on the verso of the title page, signed by both, standing in front of the Arkansaw Travellers Hotel, plus two newspaper clippings reprinting letters to the editor by Tomkins. Cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the front cover, 77 pp., introductory notes, illustrated. The greater part of the edition, apparently, was issued in wrappers. One of the scarce publications that deals with sign language of the recognized tribes with sign-talking ability. As a young man the author lived on the edge of the Sioux Indian Reservation in Dakota Territory located at Fort Sully, Cheyenne Agency, Pierre, and surrounding sections. He learned some of the Sioux language and has made a study of sign. Words and signs are expressed alphabetically and with signs and stories are presented as pictographic stories. This book is adopted officially by The Boy Scouts of America. Very good clean copy.
