Publication: J B Lippincott & Co, 1869, Philadelphia
First edition. Cloth, brown front and rear endpapers, 456 pp., preface, three plates, appendix. The author traveled extensively by stage throughout the northern Rockies in 1867 and 1868. He visited Denver and Salt Lake City and Montana. His travel was frequently disrupted by problems with hostile Indians. McClure tells much about Colorado; the Mormons; the mines and vigilante justice in Montana; military trouble protecting the travel routes; and the typical problems between the military, politicians, and ordinary citizens about dealing with hostile Indians.
