First edition. Author's first book. First Colonial Issue, a trade size paperback original. Inscribed by the author on the front fly leaf, “My own copy (of the paper edition). Harry Stephen Keeler.” A small old water stain to the bottom edge of the front cover and to the fore-edge of the front fly leaf, a faint triangular corner crease to the rear cover and light wear to the extremities with a few tiny nicks and light wear. Overall a very good copy. A tantalizing detective-mystery story in which a newspaper reporter is assigned to solve a bank defalcation and the curious disappearance of his employer's daughter---all of which led to a trail of opium smoke.
