Publication: James H Barry, Publisher, 1887, San Francisco
First edition. 7 1/4" x 5" tan printed wrappers. 57 pp. Pioneer journalist James O'Meara was always a defender of the Law and Order party, which opposed the Vigilance Committee, though he was never a member of either. He describes the 1856 Vigilance Committee from the perspective of one who did not agree with them. The vigilantes briefly controlled the politics of California. Cowan 165 says, "The cover title bears the date of 1890. Mr. O'Meara was a non-sympathizer, and his book is written from the point of view of the 'Law and order' faction." Small closed tear to top of front panel and with light chipping to spine as well as 1" chip missing from top corner of rear wrapper. Very good.
