Publication: Woodward, Tiernan & Hale, Printers, 1878, St Louis
First edition. Broadsheet folded to form a 3 3/4" x 7 3/4" brochure. Recto containing 6 panels of text, 4 timetables, and 2 cover pages, Verso has a nice color map of the State of Texas. The map on the verso is entitled "A Geographically Correct Map of the State of Texas by the Texas & Pacific Railway." It is a full page map with green coloring. The railroads are highlighted in black, with inset distance tables. Text sections promote "Texas, The Garden State of America," and "Northern Texas! Its Soil, Climate, Products and Resources." There is also an excerpt from the "Constitution of the State of Texas" relating to the homesteads of families. The Texas and Pacific Railway Company was founded in 1871 with the purpose of becoming a southern Transcontinental Railroad between Marshall, Texas and San Diego, California. The railroad had construction difficulties until Jay Gould became an investor. The American Financier led the railroad not to San Diego, but allowed it to merge with Southern Pacific in Sierra Blanca, Texas in 1881. Covers lightly used, light wear to fore-edges and corners, and a few small breaks at folds else a very good copy. Another issue of this present brochure was issued in 1880.
