First edition. Author's first mystery novel. Page edges uniformly tanned, else fine in dust jacket. In 1945, an art historian leads a convoy of valuable art towards Dresden in the hopes the treasures will be safe there. Nearly fifty years later art dealer Oswald Ginn is sent a photograph of a nineteenth-century masterpiece presumed destroyed during the bombing of Dresden. With rumors of the painting's survival three people are sent to search for the painting, while someone else just sits back and watches. Great intrigue and deception. The title is taken from Gustave Courbet's The Stonebreakers, allegedly destroyed in 1945 during the bombing of Dresden.
