Publication: South Dakota State Department Of History, 1930 & 1934, Pierre, South Dakota

First Editions. Two Volumes. Original Green Cloth. 730pp. and pp.[177]-551. Volumes XV and XVII of South Dakota Historical Collections. compiled and issued by the State Historical Society. Large, folding, panoramic photographic plate of the battlefield at the Little Big Horn, "The Dr. Burnside Picture". Sub-titles of each volume: Volume XV-The Sioux Wars, Minnesota Outbreak; Red Cloud and Other Wars of 1867; Little Big Horn; Wounded Knee. Volume XVII-The Sioux Wars, Red Cloud Wars; Little Big Horn And Other Battles Of 1876; Wounded Knee. "DeLand's work was voluminous but highly regarded by Dustin and other researchers as "complete, authentic, and accurate history." It includes coverage of the Battle of the Little Big Horn and an interview with Sitting Bull that reveals he never was a chief and knew nothing of battle tactics, and uses the accounts of battle survivors such as Sergeant Thomas O'Neill, Private Wm. Slapper, Private Daniel Newell, Private Theodore Golden, Lieutenant Charles DeRudio, Lieutenant Edward Godfrey, George Herendeen, Custer's Crow scouts, and Red Horse. DeLand relied heavily on Fred Dustin's The Custer Tragedy manuscript (unpublished at the time), and is therefore very pro-Reno in nature.--O'Keefe 2251 & 2252. Custer High Spot #111-"This work is quite complete and gives a particularly detailed account of Custer's route up to the time he crossed the divide." An excellent, detailed history of this important conflict. Bump to upper fore-corners of Volume XVII, else a clean, bright, tight, fine set. Rarely offered together, with many believing Volume XV to be the complete work. A handsome set protected in a matching green cloth slipcase.
