Dark plum-colored blind-stamped cloth over beveled boards, titles stamped in gilt on the front cover, 355 pp. plus 10 pages to include a Tourists' Guide, index, and travel suggestions including Monterey, California, Japan and China, and a small map showing the route of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific R. Y., illustrated pictorial title page, frontispiece, double column, with over 150 text engravings illustrations and maps. This lavishly illustrated 1882-1883 Union Pacific & Central Pacific RR travel guide. This work was intended for Trans-continental railroad travelers, revealing the natural history, flora & fauna, tourist sites, and more along the routes. This Bowman edition incorporates information on the Southern Pacific, and includes significant updates on mining, mines, and properties. Included as well are sections on Yellowstone, Yosemite; history, cities & views of Utah, California, the Chinese & Chinatown in San Francisco, desert scenes and towns in New Mexico, and Arizona, along with camping, hunting, and fishing. Of particular interest are the sections on American Indian tribes at various spots along the Railroad routes. Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corners, internally clean and tight, overall a very good copy of an interesting and informative book.
