Frontispiece (included in pagination) and in-text illustrations throughout, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, boards with blind-ruled borders; all text block edges trimmed. light wear to the spine ends and corners, small wear spot at top edge of rear cover, top edge of spine repaired, former owner's inked name and date on front pastedown sheet, fore-edges of pages uniformly lightly tanned, light foxing to front and rear endpapers, rear endpapers darkened due to a paper clipping having been laid-in, and a small closed tear to the fore-edge of the rear endpaper. Good copy of a book regarded as "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels" (T. S. Eliot, quoted in David, The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, p. 179).
