First edition. 8vo. Introduction by John Alexander Carroll. Decorated wrappers with a Jose Cisneros drawing, iv, 24 pp., introduction, chronological list. Printed by Carl Hertzog, this paper was originally prepared in 1917, and was the author's major historical thesis after an exploratory visit to the archives of Mexico City in the summer of 1902. The author examines how Spain was able to spread its influence across South and Central America while having its resources spent on wars in Europe. He identifies three elements of the Spanish frontier - conquistadors, presidial soldiers and missionaries, with an emphasis on the latter. Fine copy.
