When The Merchandise Mart opened in 1930, it was the largest building in the world, with 4,000,000 square feet of floor space. Built by Marshall Field & Company. In 1945 Joe Kennedy purchased The Mart. The Mart housed products that target audiences and department store buyers wanted to see and purchase. Filled with photographs and pictures of the building and everything that it has to offer to include a bank, restaurant, cafeteria, coffee shop, clothing store, furniture shop, china, glass and pottery, shops, a post office, barber shop, a home-building exhibit, a drug store, etc. Offers information about the railroad service, parking, taxis, ventilation, elevators. the National Broadcasting Company, the Merchants and Manufacturers Club, etc. Listing of interesting facts about The Mart to include dimensions, area, height, materials used, etc. Chart offered showing what shops and/or services are on each of the building's 24 floors.
