The author, a surgeon for the U.S. Army, was for some period of time stationed at Fort Massachusetts in the San Luis Valley. While there he befriended Carson and during their relationship the author learned more of Carson's career as a Rocky Mountain scout and guide. Carson had been dictating his own autobiography, the manuscript for which he gave to Peters [Wagner-Camp].
