First edition. 8vo. "Reviewers Copy"of an edition limited to 950 copies. "Reviewers Copy" written in red ink in the position where the number of the copy should appear. Cloth, 183 pp. + 1 page advertisement, introduction, index. Folding plate facsimile of a page from Fowler's manuscript journal serves as frontis illustration. "An important early journal; Fowler was second in command in a party of 20 men under Hugh Glenn. They left Ft. Smith in September, 1821, and went along the Arkansas River, following approximately the route that later became the Santa Fe Trail in that region, to the site of present Pueblo, Colorado. They went on to Taos and returned east in 1822, following the Santa Fe Trail in part and mentioning seeing the tracks of Becknell's wagons."---Jack Rittenhouse. The footnotes by Elliott Coues add much information and perspective. This copy inscribed and signed by Coues, to Colorado College Geology professor, F. W. Cragin. Cragin retired from teaching in 1903 and dedicated the next 34 years to research and writing about the history of the American West. This copy has occasional corrections and hundreds of notations, neatly written in the blank margins, in pencil and in black ink, throughout the book. We assume them to have been made by Professor Cragin. Coues presentation inscription is on the upper portion of the front free-endpaper, in black ink, and dated May, 1898. Some very light edgewear. Near fine condition.
