Publication: Knopf, 1959, New York
First edition. 8vo. Inscribed by the author to his lawyer and longtime friend, "For Harris and Nancy [Seed] two of the best people I know. Affectionately, Ken, April 1959." Fine in dust jacket with light wear to spine ends, and with one small closed tear to top edge of rear panel. Lew Archer is hired by an elderly woman to find her son, Anthony Galton. Anthony disappeared twenty-three years before along with a suspiciously streetwise bride and several thousand dollars of his family's fortune. Archer's investigation turns up is a headless skeleton, a boy who claims to be Galton's son, and a con game whose stakes are so high that someone is still willing to kill for them. Beautiful copy.
