Publication: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1861, London
First edition. 8vo. Two-tone quarter leather and cloth, decorated front and rear endpapers, x [2], 707 [1] pp.,teg, frontispiece (Great Salt Lake City), preface, illustrated, plus plates and folding map, appendices, index. The author travelled from Saint Joseph to Salt Lake City in 1860. After a month's stay in Utah he went to California. He was sympathetic toward the Mormons, and this work contains a Mormon chronology and documents. Burton went on to San Francisco via the Comstock. "The Mormons have been represented, and are generally believed to be, an intolerant race; I found the reverse far nearer the fact. The best proof of this is that there is hardly one anti-Mormon publication however untruthful, violent, or scandalous which I did not find in Great. S. L. City." (p.249). Six Guns 347 says "contains material on road agents and Joseph Slade." Attractively bound in red Moroccan leather over red cloth boards by Brian Frost & Company. Raised bands and gilt stamped title on spine. An exceptional copy in fine condition.
