Publication: Published For The Author By Lange, Little & CO, Printers, 1875, New York
First edition. 8vo. Green cloth, gold stamping on spine, 314 pp., dedication, preface, appendix, conclusion. Basic Texas Books 17 says, " This is the only complete history of the largest single unit of Texas troops in the Civil War, the only division in the Confederate army composed of troops from a single state. Raines called it "one of the best war histories written, as to the Texas troops. "Written by a corporal on the staff of General Richard Scurry, it was derived from his own diaries, "jotted down on the long and weary march, in the quiet camp, before and after the fierce conflict of deadly strife." This division was also known as the "Greyhound Division." The unit served primarily in Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas, and was the backbone of the Confederate forces of the Trans-Mississippi West. Its major contributions were at battles held at Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Jenkins' Ferry, and Milliken's Bend. Three governors of Texas were in the division: Edward Clark, O.M. Roberts, and R.B. Hubbard. Front and rear endpapers have been replaced and the corners and spine have been replaced by a master conservator and the titles stamped in gilt on the spine. A handsome and well-presented near fine, tight copy of an important Texas and Civil War book.
