First edition. 8vo. Two-tone quarter cloth and boards, title stamped in yellow on the spine, xvi [5], 290 pp., preface, acknowledgments, illustrated, portraits, maps, notes, bibliography, index. Haley carefully analyzes the causes of the Indian unrest, centering upon the great buffalo slaughter which threatened to destroy forever the foundation of Indian life. In 1874, a huge war party of Comanche, Kiowa, and Cheyenne Indians attacked a settlement of buffalo hunters in the Texas panhandle, touching off the last war on the South Plains. Very good in dust jacket with minor nicks to the extremities and a closed tear to the top edge of the front cover. A fine copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket with small half-inch piece missing in lower fore-corner of rear panel.
