Carpenter (1834-1912) oversaw it's rapid growth during the Civil War providing tents for the Union Army, survived the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and Panic of 1873, and continued to expand in the 20th Century under the direction of his sons Benjamin, Hubbard, and John Carpenter, before declining during the Great Depression, and merged with Lundberg, Inc. in 1936.
