This spectacular 2" x 3 1/2" belt buckle with coral was created by Diné of the Navajo Nation silversmith Thomas Jim. The artist took a beautiful piece of red coral and surrounded it in an elaborate frame of sterling silver. The silverwork accentuates the unique red color of the coral. Jim set the coral in an elegant straight-edged bezel. Radiating from the center are rays of silver encompassed by bands of silver and twisted wire. The outer part of the buckle has added drops of silver and sections of sleek silver elements. The style of Thomas Jim (1955- ) is distinctive in that he uses silver in a manner that creates a sense of movement. He is the recipient of many awards, and his work is shown in many publications including Dexter Cirillo's Southwest Indian Jewelry. The buckle is signed on the back with the artist's hallmark, TJim. The buckle is in excellent condition.
