Red cloth, titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover and spine, [3], 294 pp., preface, a short autobiography, frontispiece, illustrated, portraits. Born in Australia, the author arrived in San Francisco in 1850, along with his parents and his sister. He relates much about San Francisco in the 1850s. The family moved on to Victoria in British Columbia and he tells of boyhood days there, the town's first directory, the Victoria Gazette, the 1860s, fires, churches, the pioneer society, the Post Office, a visit to southern California, the first YMCA in Victoria, and much more. Spine lightly faded, tiny corner crease to top of front fly leaf and half-title page, else a very good, clean copy.
