The story has been extensively revised, expanded and rewritten by the author, and includes an Introduction. Sharpe and his Light Company are guarding a Major Tubbs who is investigating captured French muskets in a quiet backwater fort by a river crossing. It all appeared serene until the French made their raid and the British found themselves in a whale of a fight.
