Jay Meade had found gold at Kansas Gulch -- a lot of gold. If he could keep his find a secret, he would be a very rich man. But he had to deal with Bennet Mercer first. Ben Mercer was smart, supposedly rich, and dangerous. He was also suspicious of Meade and let him know that he suspected something about the lay of the land where Meade's claim was hidden. To make matters worse, Mercer had also taken an interest in Ellen Greenaway, the young widow that Meade found himself spending more and more time with. That's when Meade realized that he might have to kill to keep his secret safe.
