Former owner's penciled name and date (1875) on the front fly leaf else a fine, bright, clean copy without the dust jacket, as issued. One of the earliest American detective novels published which deals with the world of antiquarian books, bookselling and book auctions. Gowan's Second-Hand Catacomb in New York City figures prominently in the story. A rare book and a very nice copy. Housed in a cloth slip case with titles stamped in gold gilt on a leather label affixed to the spine.
