First edition. 12mo. Red cloth spine and printed paper, 88 pp., illustrated, portraits. Prisoner 4382, who remains unidentified, provides poetry and an interesting sketch of the Oregon State Penitentiary. Information is provided on the prison officials, the prisoners, prison cells, the prison chapel, the dining room, hospital, prison employments, prison shops, the execution chamber, religious services, etc. There is a chapter on the Tracy-Merrill prison escape of June 9, 1902, whereby the two killed four guards, and made their escape over the wall. They later quarreled between themselves and Tracy killed Merrill. Tracy met his end by firing a bullet into his brain while trapped by the police in a wheat field. Small, light book store stamp on front cover, else a very good copy.
