The author spent most of his time in America traveling through Wyoming, Montana, Washington Territory, California, Nevada, and into Idaho. Cattle, cowboys, round-ups, sheep-driving, herders, and life on the prairie. The author had a mildly optimistic view of the possibilities of the western range based on his travels throughout the western United States in 1882 and 1883. Six Score 97 says, "An Englishman's observations on ranching in America. Shepherd's book added fuel to the cattle boom fever in England when published." Flake 7684a says "Experiences among the Mormons of Utah, p.253-264." Herd 2057 says, "Scarce." Minor cosmetic touch-up to spine ends and corners, spine internally reinforced, else a near fine, bright, tight, clean copy.
