Map of New Orleans. 10.875" wide x 7.625" high, with blank margin varying from .25" to .875." This famous map was considered the standard map of New Orleans for the 18th century. It first appeared in Charlevoiux's, History And General Description of New France in 1742, and was subsequently issued in other books. Sub-titled: "Sur Les Manuscrits Du Depot Des Carter De La Marine. Par M. B. Ingr. de la Marine." Our map was issued in Prevost's, Histoire Generale Des Voyages in 1757. A wonderful map showing many features of what is today known as The French Quarter. It identifies 18 different locations including the Parish church, municipal buildings, barracks, a powder magazine, Ursuline Academy, the hospital, monastery, Army and Navy headquarters. It shows houses, gardens, and several streets, including "Rue de Bourbon". A 3" strip of the blank margin in the upper left corner is missing, not affecting the map or its printed border line. Half-inch closed tear to left edge of map. Two horizontal folds and several vertical folds. Map shows some tanning, but clean and in very good-near fine condition. Attractive and suitable for framing. A rare and important early map of Colonial New Orleans under French rule.
