Original green cloth with embossed devices in black on the front cover and without color on the rear cover,decorated front and rear endpapers, 452 pp., frontispiece, (portrait of Robert Carr), biography. Includes Carr's overland adventures from Peoria, Illinois to Hangtown, California, via Forts Leavenworth, Laramie, Bridger (where he met Jim Bridger) and Salt Lake City, as well as his experiences in the northern mines, with good accounts of Weaverville and the Chinese War of 1854. Mattes 751 says "A minor overland classic. Editor considers Carr to be an extraordinarily robust and dauntless fellow, gifted with great stamina and fortitude... [and] a capacity of humor that makes the hardships of the time endurable." Wheat 35 says "Hangtown and the 'Trinity Diggings.' A worth while chronicle." Light wear to the spine ends and corners, else a very good copy.
