Photo #541. Framed and mounted 5 1/4" x 8 1/4" silver gelatin photograph in 9 1/2" x 13" frame. Photo shows men, women and children gathered on the pier and on the beach on Santa Catalina Island. In the background is a ferry with smoke billowing from its smokestack. Charles B. Waite was born in Ohio in 1861. In 1881 Waite moved to California where he was working with photographer Henry Ellis Coonley in the San Diego region. In the 1890s, Waite's photographs of Southern California ranches and landscapes appeared in the magazine Land of Sunshine. Faint backstamp. Nice contrast.
