Publication: The New Mexican Printing Company, 1908, Santa Fe

First edition thus. 8vo. Originally published in 1878, using the title KIT CARSON'S FIGHT WITH THE COMANCHE AND KIOWA INDIANS AT THE ADOBE WALLS ON THE CANADIAN RIVER, NOVEMBER 25TH, 1864 .... This is Bulletin 12 published by the Historical Society of New Mexico. Brown printed wrappers, 35 pp., frontispiece, illustrated, portraits. At the close of the Civil War, the plains Indians, Comanche, Kiowa, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, and the Plain Apache were attacking and murdering many white settlers. In October, 1864, Brigadier General James H. Carleton, U. S. Volunteers then commanding the Department of New Mexico , believing that the Comanches and Kiowas might be found on the south side of the Canadian River in winter quarters, issued a general order, directing an expedition against these Indians. Colonel Carson with armed forces and military equipment was chosen to lead this expedition. They attacked and burned the village, then retreated to their camp at Adobe Walls, where they were, in turn, attacked by the Indians. If it hadn't been for the howitzers, commanded by Captain Pettis, the vastly outnumbered army forces would have been over-run. Small remnant of a sticker in upper fore-corner of front wrapper, and previous owners name and address lightly stamped in lower portion of front wrapper, else a fine copy. Protected in custom clamshell case with title and author in gilt on spine.
