Corps of Engineers. Engineer Officer of the Department. Scale: 1 inch = 15 Miles. 105-112 degrees W. 34-28.5 degrees N. This map covers a large area; with an eastern border including Fort Stanton, NM and Fort Quitman in west Texas stretching west to Phoenix and the north end of the Gulf of California. The northern extremities include Fort Apache, AZ; Fort Craig and Fort Stanton, southward into Mexico as far south as Hermosillo and the Yaqui River. Features of the map include the Department Headquarters, Military Posts and Camps, Roads and Trails (Wagon Roads distinguished from Pack Mule Trails), Heliograph Stations, Telegraph lines, Railroads, Sites of Indian fights, Towns, Ranchos, Creek beds, International and state/territorial boundaries, etc. One of the last campaigns of the Indian wars took place in 1886 when Geronimo left the reservation again. The army pursued 40 Indians for 300 miles through the Sierra Madre without capturing them. Although his orders were to obtain an unconditional surrender, Miles eventually had to settle for a negotiated settlement with terms.
