Large Mounted Photograph. 6.5" x 4.375." Mount 10" x 8." In white across bottom edge of image: "Chief Eggleston Or Antelope Main Indian In Massacre Of Colonel Meeker October 1879." Nathan C. Meeker, agent of the White River Utes in northwest Colorado, had incited hatred among his charges by demanding that they become farmers and by plowing up the meadows where they grazed their horses. When Meeker called for help from the U.S. Army the Utes were furious. Chief Antelope professed "to be friendly" with the white settlers of his land; however, he was suspected of participating in the Meeker Massacre in northwestern Colorado in late September 1879. Chief's Antelope and Douglas had accompanied E. W. Eskridge to the White River Agency on the morning of September 29th. It was suspected that Antelope and Douglas, along with 20 braves, killed all the white males in the agency, which included Nathan Meeker, George Eaton, Fred Sheppard, W.H. Post, Henry Dresser, W.H. Thompson, E.L. Mansfield, and E. Price. They were also suspected of murdering E.W. Eskridge, Julius Moore, Frank Dresser, and Carl Goldstein, whose bodies were found on the road to the White River Agency. The women of the agency hid in an agency building; but after it was torched, they tried to flee but were captured. The women were later rescued by the efforts of Ute Chiefs Our, Johnson, and Piah. A strikingly handsome, studio image. Antelope stands beside a large chair with a simple, dark background. He is dressed in white men's clothing including pants, collared shirt with a tie, a vest, and a suit coat. His brass belt appears to hold ammunition. He holds a hat to his side. Three small scuffs, else a fine, clean, clear image.
