Publication: W R Cross, Photographer, Circa 1891, Hot Springs, South Dakota
Original Cabinet Card Photograph. 5.5" x 3.875". Unprinted mount with scalloped gilt edges, 6.5" x 4.25". Taken at Pine Ridge Agency, a very interesting image showing a group of 22 Lakota Sioux Indians, lined-up for a photograph. The majority are male adults, nearly all of whom are holding a spear and are wearing elaborate headdresses, many of which feature buffalo horns. Four young children are seated as the front row. Photographer W. R. Cross, from Hot Springs, South Dakota made a trip to the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre in January, 1891, just 2 weeks after the massacre by U.S. troops. Whether this image was taken then or during a subsequent trip is unknown to us. There are spots of damp staining along upper edge of mount, accordingly a light, 1" x .25" dampstain to middle of upper edge of image, else the image is clean and clear with perhaps little fading. Very good condition.
