Publication: 1930s,

Inscribed photograph of American western fiction author B. M. Bower, "To Willie Millstein, Very sincerely yours, 'Mr' B. M. Bower." Bertha Muzzy Bower (Nov. 15, 1871 - July 23, 1940), was born as Bertha Muzzy at Cleveland, Minnesota. She married Clayton J. Bower December 20, 1890, mothering three children; then Bertrand W. Sinclair August 14, 1906, mothering one child; and finally Robert Ellsworth Cowan, who survived her. Thrapp p. 148 says, "She was a friend of Charlie Russell. B. M. Bower's first novel CHIP OF THE FLYING U, appeared in 1904, in book form two years later. In all she wrote 68 books, two published posthumously, and at least 129 magazine stories and short pieces. Her writings, all westerns, were immensely popular during her lifetime." Some of her novels were turned into films, including NORTH OF FIFTY-THREE, THE WOLVERINE, RIDIN' THUNDER, THE FLYING U RANCH, CHIP OF THE FLYING U, POINTS WEST, and KING OF THE RODEO. She was the only woman to have a reputation in western fiction in the same league as such men as Zane Grey, Max Brand, William MacLeod Raine, etc. Signed photographs of Bower are rare. A fine copy.
