Publication: Letter over the signature of Hiram Smith, Jr, Acting Commissioner, 1889, Washington, D C

Typed letter on Department of the Interior stationery and dated October 17, 1889. A copy of the letter is also sent to W. Martin Jones, Esq., Osborne House Block, Rochester, N. Y. who is Mrs. Custer's lawyer. The letter reads: "Sir : In reply to your letter of the 11th instant, I have to state that Mrs. Elizabeth C. Custer, widow of General George A. Custer, is now on the pension roll at the rate of $50. per month, under Special Act of Congress approved July 31, 1882. Very respectfully, Hiram Smith Jr., Acting Commissioner." Additionally reference is made to Special Act Cert. # 178,408. Old small water stain to top left edge, three faint horizontal fold lines and two punch hole marks at top else a very good copy.
