First Edition. Limited to 50 copies of a Special Edition on "Utopian" paper. Decorative Boards with Cloth Spine, 159 pp., Large Folding Map. Foreword. Index. A fine, scholarly work on Gen. Ashley and the early fur trade exploration of the Rocky Mountain region. Includes much on the exploits of Jedediah Smith, Thomas Fitzpatrick, James Clyman, William Sublette, Joshua Pilcher, Wilson Price Hunt, John Colter, David Jackson, Major Andrew Henry, and others. Of significant importance is this first publication of the letters of Daniel Potts, written in 1826 and 1827. The Potts' letters are said to be a record of the first confirmed visit to the Yellowstone/Jackson Hole area by white men. "Contains the letters of Daniel T. Potts who was in the Rocky Mountains with Ashley's men from 1822 to 1827."--Wright Howes. The folding map is important for it's record of the many trapping exploration routes of Gen. Ashley's men in the 1820's. A clean, fine, bright, copy; even the extremely fragile original plain glassine dust jacket is 90% complete, with a few closed tears and losses at three corners. Protected in custom slipcase.
