Publication: Beirut: "Imprimerie Catholique", 1958,
First edition. Limited to 200 copies. Generic inscription by the author, "With best wishes for 1959, Robert van Gulik, Beyrouth, 1958." Fine in printed wrappers. This Judge Dee story is the scarcest of all the Judge Dee books. A murder mystery that takes place on New Year's Eve in ancient China. It was sent out to friends in lieu of a New Year's greeting card. The booklet is 32 pages and is seldom offered for sale. An unusually sharp copy of a very scarce title, housed in a four-point case that is inserted into a cloth slipcase with leather labels on the spine and titles stamped in gold.
