First edition. Author's third book, but second mystery novel. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "Howard / Hi! / Dick Francis." Lightly foxed along the fore-edges and extending a bit into the margin of a few pages, else a fine copy in lightly rubbed dust jacket, lightly sunned on the spine, light wear to head of spine and corners, and a tiny nick to top edge of the front cover panel. A struggling young jockey ... a misfit in a family of accomplished musicians ... discovers that his troubling losing streak is caused not by a lack of skill or confidence, but by something far more sinister.
