They escorted the caravan a far as the Cimarron River, then returned to Chouteau’s Island on the Arkansas River where they were subjected to several days’ attack by Indians. They remained there until October 12, when a return caravan from Santa Fe arrived under Mexican military escort, commanded by Lt. Col. Jose Antonio Vizcarra ..."
