Original half leather and cloth with title stamped in gold on spine, decorated endpapers, xix [3], 655 pp., frontispiece, [portrait of J. C. Fremont], scope of the work, illustrated, 82 plates, 7 maps, [1 in color and 4 folding], large folding map in a pocket affixed to sheet at end of text, tables. An attempt to record the more important and interesting parts in the journals of various expeditions made by Fremont in the course of Western exploration and to give his views of political and military events in which he took part. The book has three principal subjects: the geographical explorations made in the interest of Western expansion; the presidential campaign of 1856, made in the interest of an undivided country; and the civil war, made in the same interest. Howes F 369 says, "Embraces the first three exploring expeditions and the part played by him in the conquest of California. Manuscript for a second volume is in the Library of Congress." Some professional restoration to front and rear spine channels, else very good, attractive copy housed in a cloth slipcase with leather label on spine. Rare today.
