When the Northwest Company merged with the Huson's Bay Company in 1821 McLoughlin was in charge at Fort William on Lake Superior. He became Chief Factor for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1824 and Supervisor for the Columbia District. He was based at Fort George (formerly Fort Astoria) for several years, then moved across the river to the Washington side, at Fort Vancouver, where he remained until he retired in 1846. Afterward McLoughlin became an American citizen in Oregon. Often called "the Father of Oregon", McLoughlin "ruled" much of the Pacific Northwest during his many years with the Hudson's Bay Company. Offered in this important set, his letters provide tremendous insight into the events of this region during this important period. A couple of minor marks on volumes IV and VI, else an exceptionally fine, bright, tight set. Unread, with many pages in each volume uncut.
