Lew Wallace was born in Indiana in 1827, where he went to school and eventually became a lawyer, He volunteered for the Mexican War as a 1st Lieutenant in Company H, 1st Indiana infantry. Afterwards he returned and resumed his legal profession. He entered the Civil War and had a distinguished career. He became governor of New Mexico in 1878, and came to frontier prominence by his statehouse role in the Lincoln County War. Later in 1881 he became U.S. minister to Turkey, serving until 1885. He returned to Crawfordsville, Indiana and resumed practice as a lawyer. He authored two important novels, The Fair God, a story of the conquest of Mexico [Boston, 1873], and Ben-Hur, a Tale of the Christ [New York, 1880]. He also authored two lesser-known books that were published in 1888. A fine, unread handsome set housed in a cloth slipcase with cloth label on spine and titles stamped in navy blue.
