Publication: Government Printing Office, 1853, Washington
First Edition. Disbound. 18pp. Senate. 32nd Congress, 2nd Session. Ex. Doc. No. 57. March 3, 1853. This report, containing detailed correspondence, is highly critical of the corruption found by Beale upon his arrival in California, as it pertains to the treatment of Indians by local officials and citizens. Accusations of the sale of large numbers of cattle, intended to feed the Indians, by corrupt persons who instead sold the cattle to the miners for large profits, resulting in the near starvation of many groups of Indians. The unprovoked killing of Indians, the kidnapping and enslavement of Indian children, are among the many crimes recorded in correspondence within this report. Dampstaining to upper fore-corner of text block, heavier on the last few pages, and a 2" closed tear to the fore-edge of the blank last page. Good-very good.
