Publication: Hawk-Eye Steam Print, 1892, Mt Vernon, Iowa
First edition. 12mo. Cloth edition, [2], 40 [1] pp., three portraits on two conjugate leaves on coated stock, preface, introduction. Introduction by Jas. Hughes. Preface by Mrs. Emeline L. Fuller. Howes F407 says, "Only account by a survivor of the sufferings of the 1860 Utter-Myers emigrating party of fifty-four members, all but fifteen of whom perished from hunger or were killed by Indians on the Snake river in Idaho. Among overland disasters, equaled in horror only by that of the Donner party; cannibalism was resorted to in both cases." Eberstadt says, "One of the most harrowing records of personal experience, hardship and adventure on the overland ever to achieve publication. Those familiar with the terrible extremities to which the Donner Party were reduced in the Sierra's will understand--and condone--the revolting means by which the remnant of this later party kept itself alive. In cold type we read: "We cooked and ate the bodies of each of the poor children, first sister Libbie, then Mr. Chase's boys, and next my darling little baby sister. We also dug up the body of Mr. Chase." Eberstadt 106:115 says, "The original edition was destroyed in the author's home ... and but five copies are known to exist." Front title page in facsimile, corner torn from top of pages 37-38 affecting 4 to 6 words. All three portrait pages present. This was one of the Eberstadt copies, one of 5 known to exist. Laid-in is the 1936 Eberstadt reprint edition that is limited to 200 copies. Housed in a blue clamshell case with titles stamped in gilt on the spine.
