Maroon cloth, front cover stamped in blind, title stamped in gilt on the spine, original decorated front and rear endpapers, 265 pp., frontispiece [portrait], preface, illustrated, portraits. The author, who at the time of the Civil War, was 18 years old and was connected to the adjutant-general's office and performing staff duty. He was brought into close contact with the rank and file of regiments, brigades, and divisions and therefore was able to see much of prominent officers and to acquire information with regards to planned campaigns, troop movements, and to witness many interesting incidents. Information on Shenandoah Valley, Tennessee Campaign, Blue Springs, Henderson's Mill, Battle of Saltville, the three battles of Cynthiana, and many more battles and officers are discussed. Former owner's inked name on front fly leaf, a bit of light foxing to some early front and rear pages, a few small, closed tears to a few pages that extend into the page margins but not the text, front cover lightly soiled, and lacking errata as called for, else a very good copy of a very scarce book.
