Original blue cloth, front cover and spine decorated and lettered in gilt, with a black border on the front cover, xi [1], 511 pp., frontis., preface, 21 wood engraved plates, folding meteorological table in the back. "Garrison life on the border; Oregon and Washington Indian Wars, 1855-1858."--Rader 1609. Glisan studied medicine and practiced in Baltimore before becoming a medical officer in the U.S. Army in 1850. He served in the Indian Wars on the Plains for five years and in the Washington and Oregon territories for six years before resigning his commission. Besides Washington and Oregon, his travels during his military career also took him to Texas, Oklahoma, and California. His enlightening comments about Army life, the trials and tribulations with various Plains Indian tribes, including murders and captivity they imposed upon the settlers, an uprising of Coast Indians, the Army's move in three divisions against the Indians, and a comparative view of the climate, resources, and diseases of the Southwest, and much more. Previous owners name and date written on front free-endpaper, with subsequent owner's name and address stamped near bottom edge of same. Minor wear to edges and corners. Spine slightly sunned with chipping to top edge of spine.
